Shiny and New

Last week a dramatic development occurred in the creamery, the final wall coating was applied. The doors and windows were taped up, and for three days layers of fiberglass and polyurethane were sprayed onto the walls by a company called Ironclad. With the door jams in place and the new glossy white walls the creamery looks cleaner and brighter. During the application of the walls our crew began work on projects outside the creamery, like putting up the walk-in refrigerator and welding frames for cheese aging racks.

Ironclad's materials ready to go.
Final wall coating goes on.
A grey day, but the walls are bright.
Final window frame treatment, with sloped sills for ease of cleaning.
Installation of the prefabricated refrigerator box.
Completed walk-in cooler.
Installing the ceiling.
Water-proof electrical outlets.

Mud, Kids and Chevre

I was pondering about what to write about in my blog this week and I was just stumped. I’ve written (and bragged) enough about my role at Culture.. I’ve posted snazzy cheese inspired dinners and movies.. I’ve even stooped to ragging on other Culture bloggers. I turned my lovely girlfriend for suggestions, “Well, spring is just around the corner..why don’t you write about something that you think of with warm weather?”

By Choice, by Chance, by Design... they all Make the Grade!

By Chance, by Choice, by Design… they all make the Grade!

Tomorrow I turn 30.  This time last year I was crossing my fingers we'd be using the new milking parlor by my birthday.  Well, we were a week late, but it was close.  Here's hoping my birthday wish for this year, starting construction on the creamery, follows the same pattern.  In the interim, how about a little history about the herd.  Its not quite a "How To" for starting a goat dairy, but gives insight into how some of us get here!

the first 15 on pick-up day!
the first 15 feeding at the milk bar
when you can't yet afford a barn go with the vinyl carport
need a barn for a just a couple years? build a garage instead.
the herd starts to grow
milking on a budget... re-used form lumber to build the platform
another year, more goats to fit in the barn, becoming more efficient in space use
moving into the new custom barn, room to spread out
the next phase of temporary milking platforms
spacious accomodations for 2010 babies in the new barn
2011 kidding season hit full swing by mid-March, La Mancha / Nubian cross Illyria at center
2011 babies, getting some love from the dairy pup
