Foot-and-Mouth Disease Vaccine Developed in US
A vaccine has been developed for one of the most contagious animal viruses: foot-and-mouth disease. This vaccine is superior to others, since it allows veterinarians to distinguish between cows that are positive for the disease and cows that have simply been vaccinated.
The new vaccine will come with an antibody test that will enable regulators to tell the difference [between vaccinated cows and positive cows], the researchers say.
And it will also be safe to manufacture in the US because it does not use the whole live virus and cannot replicate, says Dr Larry Barrett, director of Plum Island, a US Department of Homeland Security installation.
