13 Cheese Resolutions for 2013
It’s that time of year again…the masses are making their annual pilgrimages to the gym, eating bowls of veggies and calling their mothers once a week. Yup, it’s New Year’s resolution time. And we’ve got some for you—cheese-related, of course.
Resolution #1: Make your own cheese
What better way to fully appreciate the cheesemaking process than by tackling it yourself? Try our recipes for DIY feta, and Rainy Day Ricotta.
Resolution #2: Enjoy local flavor
The local food movement gained some serious popularity in 2012, and shows no signs of slowing down. Support your local farms, neighbors, and community by picking up a wedge sourced close to home next time.
Resolution #3: Appreciate imports, too
Although the American artisanal cheese scene is booming (yay!), it’s still important to regard their international cheese cousins. Cheese consumption in Europe had dropped over the years, and it might be up to the U.S. and other export markets to keep certain cheeses in production.
Resolution #4: Utilize cheese creatively
This year, we challenge you to put blue cheese in dessert, make your soup broth with Parmigiano-Reggiano, and craft original, gourmet grilled cheese.
Resolution #5: Befriend your cheesemonger
You think you know cheese? Think again. Your neighborhood cheesemonger is your direct link to the crazy, exciting world of cheese. Talk to them. Ask questions. Get recommendations. You won’t regret it (and you’ll probably get some free samples, too).
Resolution #6: Booze it up
Forget the age-old “I’m never drinking again!” New Year’s Day hangover plea. Cheese and alcohol are like long-lost lovers, just waiting to meet again in your mouth…okay, a little far? Maybe. But seriously…drinking more is really just an excuse to eat more cheese. And vice versa.
Resolution #7: Visit dairy farms
Buying local is cool, but if you really want to make some community connections, visit your local dairy farm. Find out who makes your favorite local cheese and stop by for a visit – you may be surprised at what you learn!
Resolution #8: Make use of your leftovers
Woo, sustainability! You can do a lot more than recycling cardboard boxes. Only make purchases you’ll consume, and if you have leftover bubbly or extra cheese after a party, we’ve got some ideas for you.
Resolution #9: Write a love letter
Nothing feels better than expressing yourself. Let cheese know how you really feel. I’ve been really tryyiinnn, baby…
Resolution #10: Be kind to others
Don’t trample your friends. It’s not cool, even if you get famous. Don’t be like Buttermilk.
Resolution #11: Keep things in perspective
It’s hard to be down on yourself after watching this video of dancing cows. I mean, if they’re this happy about being outside, shouldn’t we all be?
Resolution #12: Get exotic with your cheeseplate
Now is the time to venture outside traditional cheese accompaniments! Instead of the usual sweet pairings, why not try savory options, such as mustard or pesto?
Resolution #13: Eat more cheese
Because that’s a resolution we can all stick to. Happy New Year!
